From 1959 through 1997, there were 550 reported lightning-related injuries. Lightning-strike victims carry no electrical charge and should be attended to immediately

A tropical cyclone is a storm system characterized by a large low pressure center and numerous thunderstorms that produce strong winds and flooding rain. Tropical cyclones feed on heat released when moist air rises, resulting in condensation of water vapor contained in the moist air

Twisters are colorless, but they usually take on the color of the dirt, debris, or dust they pick up. In some areas, red earth produces dramatic scarlet-hued tornadoes

Drought is a normal, recurring feature of the climate in most parts of the world. It is among the earliest documented climatic events.

From 1959 through 1997, lightning caused 169 deaths in North Carolina: 36 in open places or ballparks; 25 under trees; 22 while boating, fishing or other water-related activities; 8 on golf courses; 1 while using the telephone; and 71 at various other and unknown locations.

The water cycle, also known as the hydrologic cycle, describes the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth.

How much water vapour a parcel of air can contain before it becomes saturated (100% relative humidity) depends on its temperature. Warmer air can contain more water vapour than cooler air before becoming saturated. Therefore, one way to saturate a parcel of air is to cool it.

Any phenomenon which is due to condensation or precipitation of moisture within the Earth's atmosphere is known as a hydrometeor. All precipitation types are hydrometeors by definition.
|
A weather front is a boundary separating two masses of air of different densities, and is the principal cause of meteorological phenomena. The weather usually clears quickly after a front's passage. Some fronts produce no precipitation and little cloudiness, although there is invariably a wind shift.
|
High-pressure systems form due to downward motion through the troposphere, the atmospheric layer where weather occurs. Weather maps are created by plotting or tracing the values of relevant quantities such as sea level pressure, temperature, and cloud cover onto a geographical map to help find synoptic scale features such as weather fronts.

The main ways water vapour is added to the air are:
Wind convergence into areas of upward motion
Precipitation or virga falling from above
Daytime heating evaporating water from
the surface of oceans, water bodies or wet land
Transpiration from plants
Cool, dry air moving over warmer water
Lifting air over mountains
|
Virga is an observable streak or shaft of precipitation that falls from a cloud but evaporates before reaching the ground

Periods of drought can have significant environmental, agricultural, health, economic and social consequences.
